Cornwall
Junior Cup Match
Bude 4
Mevagissey 2
Before the game the teams'
observed a minute silence for the late Lawrie Fry who was a long time
supporter and previous player of the club and who won Club Person of the
year just 3 years ago for his years of work collecting gate money on
match days. He would have enjoyed this performance from the Bude
side in an entertaining match which went to extra time to decide the
tie. Mevagissey came closest in the first half exchanges with a shot
midway through the half being superbly tipped round the post by keeper
Phil Constable. It was early in the second half that the deadlock was
broken, a Bude free kick from Ian Marks in to the box saw Josh Allen
challenge wit the keeper who punched the ball in to air, as it came down
Gary Hodgson headed on to the cross bar and from 6 yards a Mevagissey
defender smashed the ball back in to his own goal, which any striker
would have been proud of. Bude looked comfortable for much of the
half and looked to be heading for victory when substitute Lee Lavery
equalised for the visitors. A speculative shot from 30 yards out
flew low under a team mates legs, then another's and nestled in to the
bottom left hand corner. The game got better and more entertaining
as the game went in to extra time, Bude took the lead again early on as
Stevie Thompson received in the ball in the box and struck a sweet shot
down the middle in to the roof of the net. Bude were then reduced to 10 men when player manager received a second
yellow card from a late tackle on player. Bude had to reshuffle and
upped their work rate to keep the visitors at bay, their hard work soon
paid off as they extended this
lead when winger Keith Feltham was put in down the left in to the box
and an early left foot strike beat the keeper high in to the goal. Mevagissey
reduced the arrears early in the final period when Dan Brady got in and
goal and scored a simple goal from yards out. Mevagissey continued
to press the Bude side looking for an equaliser but the back line of
Chris 'Stumpy' Hudson, Josh Allen, Rich Suttie, Steve Westlake worked
tirelessly to stop the equaliser. Bude put the game to bed with
minutes remaining, John Clayton worked superbly to win a ball off a
defender and he squared to Hodgson who found the bottom right corner
with a left foot strike.
