Bude played Mullion at home on 14th
October in the first leg of the Sandy Lodge cup quarter final.
Despite a sleepy start to the match it was Bude who scored first when
slick passing from Lizzy Jenkins found Anita Symons whose first time
cross was neatly knocked in by Katie Horstmann. Mullion levelled
shortly after from a corner when the dangerous Alice Rae was not
closed down in the box. However, Bude continued their attack and won
numerous corners and free kicks. It was only a matter of time before
another goal was scored as Anita broke through time and again and
wingers Leona Marsh and Leanne Stanbury tested the Mullion defence.
It was a Katie Horstmann corner that
eventually broke the deadlock as Lizzy Jenkins powered her header into
the net. Dell Birkenshaw was unlucky not to increase the lead as her
looping shot produced a fine save from the visiting keeper. Mullion
staged their own attacks but Claire Gifford was a brick wall in centre
defence and there was no way through. Bude made it 3-1 at half time
when another Katie Horstmann corner was knocked in by a Mullion
defender.
The home side were still not playing
to their usual standard and at the break Bude manager Aaron Westlake
encouraged them to play their own game and improve possession. Leanne
Stanbury gave Bude a great start as she scored within the first minute
– her powerful shot could only be parried into the goal by the
keeper. Soon after Katie Horstmann made it 5-1 when her hard and low
shot spun under the keeper and just crossed the line. With nothing to
lose Mullion threw everything at Bude and loaded the front line
encouraging Alice Rae to run free. A good Bude defensive line
thwarted the Mullion attack and some crunching tackles by Lisa Cornish
and Corrine Salt denied further chances. Mullion never gave up and a
good channel ball found Alice Rae one on one with the keeper, whom she
beat to make it 5-2.
