League Match
Torpoint 1
Bude 3
Bude played their first match of the
2007/8 season away to newly promoted Torpoint. The home side had a
great season last year and Bude were aware of their pace and drive. With
this in mind, new manager Aaron Westlake re-arranged the squad, building
from the defence and started with a very strong & determined Bude team.
Having only played each other once before both sides spent the first few
minutes weighing up the opposition but it was Bude who scored first when
Katie Horstmann found herself one on one with the keeper and she calmly
placed her shot past the keeper’s outstretched right hand. Torpoint
were quick to respond as within 5 minutes they had equalised when a
corner was headed in by Kirsty Lambert. Bude were not deflated and
working well as a unit they pushed forward. Anita Symons and Katie
Horstmann were titans up front and it was Anita’s sole effort that
created the second Bude goal. Having worked well to keep the ball in
play, her initial shot was blocked by the keeper but Anita pounced on
the loose ball and knocked the rebound home. Bude created further
chances and were unlucky not to increase the scoreline as Leanne
Stanbury sent a wonderful cross into the box, met by Claire Griffin who
just sent it wide. Any home attack was stifled as Dell Birkenshaw made
a nuisance of herself in midfield and debutant left back Steph Hayden
won every tackle and it remained 1-2 at half time. Bude were very wary
of the home attack in the second half and nerves showed for the first
ten minutes, however, great support from the sidelines spurred them on
and they regained their composure. It was a closer second half with
chances at both ends but the only goal of the half was from a fantastic
Katie Horstmann cross meeting Anita Symons who was strategically placed
to knock in. Katie and Anita both had further chances, just shooting
wide and Torpoint battled to the end but it finished 1-3 to the
visitors.
