Liskeard 3-0 Bude
Liskeard were keen to put matters right in this match, following the 6-0
drubbing they received at the hands of this good Bude team in their
opening league match. Liskeard learned from that earlier encounter and
were well organised at the back with Tamsyn Lawrie, Josie Elston and
Suzzi Porter providing a solid platform throughout the match. The
influential Helen Kingscott also started the game in defence, but was
moved to midfield when Liskeard lost their top scorer, of the previous
two seasons, Corinne Potts, with a niggling hamstring injury. Sabrina
Preston did a good job of nullifying the threat from the, always
dangerous, Bude Captain, Lizzie Jenkins.
It was "in-form" Lucy Borthwick who broke the deadlock scoring goals in
the 23rd and 28th minute. Liskeard were then awarded a penalty for hand
ball in the box but missed their chance to extend the lead, when a well
struck shot by Helen Kingscott was tipped onto the bar by the Bude
keeper, the ball bouncing down onto the goal line and then to safety.
The second half therefore started at 2-0 to Liskeard and, with
everything still to play for, both sides had chances to score in a
keenly fought encounter. Lucy Borthwick was denied her hat trick by the
cross bar. Liskeard keeper Lauren Horner made some important stops to
keep the score at 2-0. Francesca Young who was impressive throughout,
making several good chances for herself, finally got her reward when she
ran through to score Liskeard's third goal in the 85th minute.
