Bude played Falmouth Town away
on Sunday 17th in the Cornwall county cup.
This was always going to be a tough fixture for Bude, facing top of
the
league as their first game for almost 3 months.
Manager Aaron Westlake asked for 110% and that is what he got. As
Falmouth
bomdarded the Bude defence they held firm and Lisa Cornish in goal
made some
vital and exquisite saves. With the majority of possession though,
Falmouth
did take the lead with a scramble in the box uncleared it fell to
their
strikers' feet.
However Bude responded well, applying pressure of their own, Sarah
Badham
was brought down on the right wing earning a free kick. Gemma Smith
laid on
a perfect cross for Leanne Clayton to tap in and it was 'game on'.
There
ensued a real battle. Falmouth pushed and pushed but were denied time
&
again either by good defensive work or the reliable hands of Lisa
Cornish.
Striker Leanne Clayton was in great form and very unlucky for Bude.
Combining well with Sarah Badham she hit the bar twice and shot
agonisingly
wide on another attempt.
Through sheer determination and hard work Bude kept the score level
until
just before half time when Falmouth's Sasha Sparkes broke through the
high
line and the low wide shot just beat Lisa Cornish.
Unfortunately the second half saw Bude tiring against a very fit
Falmouth
squad and an unorganised spell saw Falmouth score 3 in quick
succession.
Bude would not lie down and pushed again, Adele Birkenshaw once again
working tirelessly in centre mid and Anita Symons driving up the left
wing
but the goal could not be found.
At 5-1 Bude still battled so it was unlucky when a Katy Barker cross
was
deflected into the net for an own goal to make it 6-1
Falmouth continued to attacked in style and though Bude defended in
numbers
they could not prevent 2 more late goals. The 8-1 result does not
reflect
the hard work and passion that all Bude players put into this match
against
such 'in form' opponents.
