With the Newquay first team fixture
called off, they were able to field a strong team and this put extra
pressure on the home side.
Despite the odds, Bude really
showed their mettle and outplayed the visitors for the first half
hour, Leanne Clayton running rings around the defence and Leanne
Stanbury and Anita Symons ruling the left hand side. A slight lapse
in concentration was Bude’s downfall and Newquay scored twice in
quick succession to take the lead. However, Bude did not lay down,
in fact they pushed on – Reanne Westlake was unlucky - having a
couple of chances on goal – but it was Leanne Clayton who pulled one
back as she pounced on the ball fed by the lively Sarah Badham.
The second half started badly for
Bude as Newquay came out all guns blazing and 2 quick goals
followed. The pace increased and Bude still fought on, Adele
Birkenshaw once again tireless in centre mid. Corrine Salt was a
rock in centre defence, communicating well and combining with Lisa
Cornish to sweep up most of the visitors attacks. Even if a couple
of those clearances were a little unconventional!
There was a welcome return for
Leona Marsh who immediately got stuck in and made some great runs up
the right wing. With a Bude spell of pressure they pulled another
back, Lizzy Jenkins heading in from a corner. Further chances came
and went, another Lizzy free kick was saved and despite some nice
football, Bude could just not find the finish.
The last 10 minutes saw Newquay
bombard the Bude goal. Nikki Cornelius and Bryher Smeeth worked
well at full back and halted many chances but Newquay were
determined and and the match finished 2-6. Despite the scoreline
Bude held their own for the majority of this challenging fixture and
should be proud of this performance.
