Cup Match
Bude 2 Barnstaple AAC 1
This semi final of the
Westward Ho! cup was quite a lively encounter between Bude and last
seasons finalists Barnstaple AAC. Both teams jostled for possession
throughout an even game which saw few chances for both teams as both
defenses broke up most attacks. Bude took the lead mid way through
the half when striker John Clayton reacted quickest to a long through ball
down the right and running in on goal squared the ball across the six yard
box for fellow hitman Billy Hopcroft to tap in. Dan Balsdon came on as
substitute early in the second half and had a chance with his first touch,
winger Robbie Pearce dribbled past a couple of players on the right cut
inside and the ball fell in to the path of Balsdon who's early strike flew
well over the bar. Ammies started to press in the final 10 minutes
desperate for that equalizer and included the keeper coming up for corners
and with the game going in to the final 2 minutes they were rewarded for
their pressure, a ball knocked from the left to their lone striker out
right just inside the box, was given enough space to hit the sweetest shot
in to the top left corner of the goal. With the game looking like it was
going in to extra time, Bude pushed on and won a corner almost from the
kick off. The corner came in, found a defenders head but his week
looping clearance fell to Bude defender Dan Starkey who from 12 yards out
smashed a half volley in off the underside of the cross bar for a dramatic
finish to the game, "unbelievable tekkers Starkey". They now meet the
winners of Putford or last seasons champions Boca Seniors in the final to
be played at Barnstaple this Sunday.
