Cup Match
Elburton Villa 3 Bude 0
For two games in a row Bude
have played all the football but lacked the killer spirit required and
Elburton had a wealth of it which saw them progress to the second round of
this league cup The first half of the game was fairly even with both
teams having few chances, Elburton were relying on the long ball and Bude
generally dealt with it comfortably, Elburton opened up the defence once
in the half after 25 minutes, a through ball from the middle of the park,
found an unchallenged Steve Blackburn who slammed his shot down the middle
of the goal from just inside the box. Budes only kind of chance of
the half came shortly after when the lively Steve Box put a cross in from
the left, striker Tommy Statton arrived at the back of the box but put a
difficult volley wide of the far post.
Early in the second half it was much of same tight play, but as the game
went on Elburtons' energy took over and mistakes were coming from the Bude
side. Bude brought on striker John Clayton who certainly livened the
strike force up and began to put much needed pressure on the Villa back
line. He nearly equalised when a cross from Box saw Clayton just get his
diving head to it but not enough to guide it goalwards. Bude gambled
by pushing men forward for the final 10 minutes and it left massive gaps
at the back and with just minutes remaining Elburton doubled their lead
when Blackburn ran the ball down the left, cut inside the box and smashed
his shot inside the near post. Almost immediately the game was
wrapped up with Robbie Almond putting an unstoppable shot in to the top
left corner from a sharp angle.
