League Match
Callington 1 Bude
3
Bude were told to not expect the same
as their first meeting when Bude came out 7-1 winners at home in January
and that was the case in the first half as a stronger Callington side
turned up. Both teams had their chances early in the half, Callington
hitting the bar and various shots going just wide of the posts and
crossbar, Bude themselves had their moments with Billy Hopcroft, Norman
Foster and Tommy Statton coming close. Bude won a penalty after half an
hour when winger Wes Pugh stormed down the wing, his cross was
handled in the box by a Callington defender. Statton stepped up but
dragged his shot wide of the left hand post. Early in the second
half Callington took the lead, Bude only partially cleared a corner and a
shot from outside the box took a deflection of Pugh, giving keeper Gary
Dinshaw no chance. Callington nealry doubled their lead when a cross
from the left saw a close range header heading goalwards, with cheers from
the home side going up, keeper Dinshaw made a stunning reaction save
lifting the ball on to the crossbar and over. The save seemed to kick Bude
in to gear and with the introduction of Dan Balsdon Bude were soon level.
Balsdon received the ball in to his feet 25 yards out from Foster, turned
and struck an early shot at goal, which flew past the keeper, off the far
right hand post and in. Within minutes Bude were in the lead, the
ever running Foster made a strong run down the left and cut the ball back
across goal where Balsdon slid in for his second. Bude now looked
confident and could have added further goals from Statton who hit the post
and Chris Ward being denied by the keeper. Bude wrapped up the game
with 5 minutes left after a Callington foul in the box. This time
Foster took the penalty who smashed it to the right hand side.
