League Match
Bude 5 v Probus 1
After losing 7-1 to Probus
towards the end of last season, Bude used revenge as perfect motivation in
their opening league game. Bude went one nil up after 15 minutes, a Herbie
Goodgroves free kick just inside the visitors half was floated fairly low
to the edge of the box where Tommy Statton swooped to guide his header to
the bottom left corner of the goal. It wasn't long before Bude were two
nil up. Mark Goodman struck a left foot shot on to the underside of the
crossbar, the ball bounced off the goal line and Steve Smeeth was ideally
placed to nod in from close range. Both team continued to battle well as
the skies decided to open up and conditions became difficult. Just before
half time Probus nearly pulled one back when Steve Box cleared off the
Bude goal line after a corner hadn't been fully cleared. Bude looked
comfortable at the start of the second half, but Probus were dogged in
their defending. Bude finally increased their lead after 70 minutes, a
Luke Potter cross from the left picked out an unmarked Jason Ferrett, it
clipped a defenders head and Ferrett had to adjust and he produced a
scissor kick which found the bottom corner. Potter was brought down in the
box minutes later, and Goodgroves stepped up to put the game to rest as he
found the bottom corner. Probus started to produce their best football as
Bude eased and Paul Cox pulled one as he fired in an unstoppable shot from
the edge of the box. Potter deservedly got on the score sheet in the final
moments beating the keeper at the near post.
